CND Shellac vs. Gel Polish
A gel polish manicure and a Shellac manicure are essentially the same thing: long-lasting polishes cured under UV or LED lamps. The difference is that “gel polish nails” is the generic term for nails done under a UV or LED lamp, while Shellac Power Polish is a brand of gel polish nails by the company Creative Nail Design (CND).
If your local nail salon does not offer CND Shellac, don’t just get whatever gel manicure they are trying to sell you. Go to a salon that carries CND products. Results of a CND Shellac manicure should last about two weeks or longer—no chipping or fading.
The process goes like this: after a dry manicure—pushing back cuticles, shaping nails etc, the technician prepares the nail surface with ScrubFresh, a product that helps the polish adhere better. She/he then layers on a base coat and then has you place your hands under a CND (UV or LED) lamp for 10 seconds. Next comes two layers of color. You “cure” your nails in the lamp for up to two minutes, and then a layer of top coat, which is cured for another two minutes. Nails are tacky when removed at this point, then the technician wipes the tops of them with alcohol to remove the sticky residue. The final step: a swipe of CND SolarOil on cuticles to moisturize them.
When you return to get another manicure, the salon will use acetone nail polish remover to take the polish off. They wrap your nails with CND foil remover wraps. This isolates the remover to just the nail bed area so you don’t have to entirely soak your finger tips in a bowl. This saves your fingers slightly, as acetone dries out nails and skin. The actual removal of the polish should not be painful or difficult. If your technician is having a hard time removing the polish, chances are he/she either didn’t allow them to soak long enough (10-15 minutes) or you didn’t use certified Shellac product to begin with (which happens a lot)!
In conclusion, if your salon is offering Shellac manicures and you walk in to a salon and they use “other” gel polishes, and no Shellac is to be found this is false advertising. “Shellac” Power Polish is owned by CND and only salons that are using the product can advertise that they use Shellac.
